Trying to organize closet clutter can be a daunting task, but once done, it is well worth the effort. An organized closet can mean the difference between a smoothly running household and one that is overwhelmed by frazzled searches for articles of clothing and other items that family members need. Here are the 5 main steps to follow to help end closet clutter forever.
Purge
Before you can clear closet clutter, you have to determine what you really need to have in that closet. Empty the closet out completely and go through each and every item. Sort items into piles for throwing away, donating, and storing. What are left will be the items that you will want front and center in your newly organized closet.
Contain
Containers are a great way to organize closet clutter. You can find boxes, totes, baskets and bins in every shape and size to suit all kinds of items. Label containers on the front so you can see at a glance what is in each container.
Visualize
When planning your closet makeover, try to visualize how you want it to look when completed. Think about the items that you’ll be taking in and out of the closet on a regular basis. Decide if you can store items on shelves or if you need lots of room to hang items. Picture yourself getting at what you need. Can you reach everything? Are all areas accessible? Plan your closet so it is functional.
Light
One of the worst things about closets is that they are often dark. Even a well organized closet can be frustrating if you can’t see what you are trying to find. There are many battery operated lights that you can attach to the walls of the closet to provide extra light right where you need it. Try putting several around the closet to illuminate dark corners or the insides of shelves. Put some near the floor too for finding shoes and items stored there.
Directions
Look in all directions when planning your closet design. You want to use all of the space available. Think vertical and horizontal. Stack boxes in a column and use floor space under hanging rods. There is usually a lot of wasted space in a closet so try to use every bit in some way. Even a hook or two on a bare side wall can hold out of season jackets or coats.
